FIVE card game FAQ

Quick answers about playing FIVE. The full rulebook is on the Rules page.

How do you play FIVE?

Everyone gets 6 cards in hand and 3 face-down, and puts 3 hand cards face-up on top. On your turn you play cards that equal or beat the top of the pile, or take the pile. Get rid of your hand, then your face-up cards, then your face-down cards. The last player holding cards loses.

How many players can play FIVE?

2 to 6 players. You can play online with friends through an invite link, join a quick match with strangers, or play alone against bots.

Is FIVE free? Do I need an account?

FIVE is free to play in your browser, with no account and no download. Pick a name and play. On a phone you can add it to your home screen and it works like an app.

What do the special cards do?

2 resets the pile. 3 is see-through. 4 pulls cards up from the bottom of the pile. 7 means the next card must be 7 or lower. 10 burns the pile. J calls a colour. A reverses the direction. A Joker starts a showdown.

What happens in a showdown?

Everyone still playing puts down one card or a set of the same value. The lowest card takes the pile plus all showdown cards and plays next. Ties for lowest play another round.

Who starts the game?

The player with the lowest card of 5 or higher. When players tie, one of them is picked at random. Seats are shuffled every game.

When do you have to take the pile?

When you can't play, or when a face-down card you flip can't be played. You take the whole pile and play again at once. You may also take it on purpose, even with a legal play.

What happens when two Jokers meet?

The showdown goes on as normal, and at the end both Jokers are removed from the game instead of going to the loser.

How do I play FIVE with friends?

Choose Play with friends to open a private room, then share the link or QR code. Friends with the link can also watch a game live.

What is the Loop breaker?

If the exact same position comes up 5 times, the game is in a loop. Only the card causing it is burned, and the player with the lowest higher card starts again.
